3/15 Sports Review: LT and Quinn

"Congrats to my homie L.T.". That was tweeted by new Jets' cornerback Antonio Cromartie in reference to the signing of running back LaDainian Tomlinson. AC and LT were both teammates in SD before heading to NY this offseason. Tomlinson got himself a two year deal and the deal was worth about 5.2 million. He will see some action backing up running back Shonn Greene. It will be an invaluable experience for Greene. He will learn from one of the best players in NFL history. LT can still score on anybody and had 12 touchdowns last year. The Minnesota Vikings also looked at him, but LT picked the Jets. He did so mainly because of Cromartie and he thought the Jets were better. In the playoffs, the Jets beat the Chargers and LT is also familiar with the system the team runs. Tomlinson received interested mainly because he still has an elite status as a receiving back.

Mike Holmgren, I finally spelled his name right, has made over his entire quarterback corpse. Instead of Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, it is now Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme. When the Browns signed Delhomme earlier this offseason, he signed with the idea he would start as he could have played with the defending champions New Orleans Saints. Instead of rejoining the Saints for another stint as a backup, he took Cleveland's offer. Brady Quinn was also thought to have been a contender for the starting job because Delhomme had an awful year last year. Holmgren never endorsed Quinn and thought that Brady Quinn was worse. Brady Quinn was just traded to the Denver Broncos to compete with Kyle Orton for the starting job. The Browns received solid fullback Peyton Hillis, a sixth round pick, and a conditional pick in 2011. It was time for the Browns to get rid of Quinn and to move on. On the Orton versus Quinn topic, Orton seems to have the upper hand. However, no decision is for sure until head coach Josh McDaniels mulls over the task.

This year, the San Francisco 49ers signed backup quarterback David Carr. I was one of the people puzzled. Didn't they already have Shaun Hill? Well now we all know that Hill was not in the Niners' future plans. He was traded to the Lions for next year's seventh round pick. I am puzzled as to why the 49ers would take Carr over Hill. It makes sense for Detroit because they needed a serviceable backup.

The Cleveland Browns keep on making offseason deals. Former first round pick Kamerion Wimbley was traded. The linebacker proved steady on the pass rush totaling 6.5 sacks. The Oakland Raiders gave up a third round pick for him. The Browns got a far better deal because Wimbley is worth a fourth round pick. It is worth noting that the Raiders traded Derrick Burgesses to the Patriots last year for a third round pick. Burgesses is a much better player than Wimbley.

Strong safety Roy Williams was a superstar in the NFL. Last year, he missed the entire season with an injury. When healthy, Williams is one of the hardest hitters in football. He is a great safety and the Cincinnati Bengals smartly resigned him to a one year contract. The problem with Roy Williams is his complete lack of coverage. He seems to fall asleep when attempting to guard a receiver. His "attempts" are so pathetic they can hardly be counted as that. He is a good safety, but he would be a better linebacker if he could bulk up.

The Green Bay Packers are trying to do everything they can to protect Aaron Rodgers better this year. They resigned veteran stud right tackle Mark Tauscher to a multi year deal. He is elated at the news because he will be able to retire as a Packer. The problem is, all that did was keep their offensive line from being a complete catastrophe. Their offensive line was the worst in the league last year. On a lesser note, the Seattle Seahawks signed backup tight end Chris Baker. Baker is well known for his blocking skills which will be a good attribute to bring to the Hawks. It is also a great move because Baker is a good backup and the Seahawks will be running more two tight end formations.

March Madness is starting again. The brackets are out. The number one seeds were no surprise. Kentucky, Kansas, Syracuse, and Duke locked up these prestigious seeds. Ohio State, Kansas State, West Virginia, and Villanova were all number two seeds. The number three seeds were Georgetown, my Pittsburgh, New Mexico, and Baylor. Pittsburgh and coach Dixon should be patted on the back. They made a high seeding despite losing college superstars Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, and Levance Fields last year. That statement means that UNC and the other Roy Williams need to stop complaining.

A really big soccer headline is out. Overrated so called star David Beckham tore his Achilles and will miss the World Cup. That is actually good news for England. They will have a midfield spot open to someone that is actually good and that doesn't cry when you sub or criticize them.

The Cleveland Cavaliers blew down the Boston Celtics. That is no surprise considering how great the Cavs are. LeBron scored 24 in the second half. The Thunder beat the Jazz and the Bobcats won their sixth straight against of all teams the Magic. The Phoenix Suns beat the New Orleans Hornets in celebration of Steve Nash's 1,000th game. Stephen Strasburg proved how amazing he was again with a three inning shutout. He really is as good as advertised.

On Friday night, I saw the last shot of the Michigan and Ohio State men's college basketball game. Two hated rivals in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament. Ohio State pulled off the 68-69 victory. Evan Turner is impossibly important to OSU. He was guarded, and the amazing Turner shot a perfect half court three. It was miraculous and reminds me of the sheer beauty of sports. There is almost nothing more cheering and fantastic than a buzzer beater. A 37 foot long shot was what the Big Ten player of the year did to push his team to win the Big Ten tournament. With that, Evan Turner is my man of today, even though he did that on Friday. Who cares? It was magnificent and a play I will cherish forever.
