3/18 Sports Review: Derek Anderson
I wish all my readers a belated happy St. Patrick's Day. I soon realized I had no green items to wear, so I took the pinches. I know about all the Ron Washington stuff, but I just want to talk football and some basketball today.
One of the biggest signings yesterday was made by the Arizona Cardinals. They found a serviceable backup to Matt Leinart. Derek Anderson found a new team and a two year deal. It is a decent move because Anderson will be a backup and not a starter.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers bolstered their poor safety corpse by signing Sean Jones. Jones has accumulated 16 picks over the last four seasons, which is good enough for fourth best among safeties. Now that was a stat.
The continuous rumors that the Miami Dolphins were going to sign Richie Incognito turned out to be true. Incognito signed a one year deal. He will try to get a fresh start. Inco is known for his off the field issues, but is a skilled player. The Dolphs really needed him to help out a struggling line.
The Philadelphia Eagles shocked me by releasing star RG Shawn Andrews. He is one of the best offensive linemen in the game, but I guess they got fed up with his injuries. The All-Pro still wants to play, so any teams signing him will give him a one year deal.
The Buffalo Bills made a useless signing with DE Dwan Edwards. They already have the Aarons on the line, so the deal makes no sense on four year terms with 18 million overall. Edwards is a backup on the team at best, and does not deserve such a big contract. He also has an injury risk, and I don't know how many injury risks deserve four year deals. Certainly not this one.
The Washington Redskins signed quarterback Rex Grossman. He has to be a backup, but the Skins' organization are actually considering making him a starter over Jason Campbell. Yikes. At this rate, they may not have a winning season in a long, long time.
The Chicago Bears, as expected, released pro bowl corner Nathan Vasher. He was a backup and rarely played even though he is a good football player. He once owned the record for the longest play in NFL history with his 108 yard blocked field goal return. The Bears should have kept him, they need all the cornerbacks they could afford. Especially the good ones. I expect him to be signed, but in the meantime they gave Tim Jennings a two year deal. Tim Jennings! Very nice upgrade, very nice. *Sarcasm intended*.
Cliff Lee was suspended five games, good job MLB he deserved it. John Lackey continues his spring dominance throwing four shutout innings. My prediction is going well, Joba won't have the fifth rotation spot. However, he will be a great setup man with Phil Hughes. Aflredo Aceves should be the fifth starter. The man is underrated.
The Cleveland Cavaliers already clinched their second straight division title. The Magic creamed Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs 110-84. Aaron Brooks continues his hot hand hitting every seven three pointer he shot in a win against the Grizzlies. Chris Bosh helps the Raptors get by the Hawks on a late basket. Danny Granger was released from the hospital, while Stephen Curry sprained his ankle. The Mavs bounced back to beat the Bulls 113-106.
My man of the day is Aaron Brooks. Last time Melo stole the show, but this perfecto was too much to ignore.
