3/19 Sports Review: NCAAB Upsets
March 19th 2010 05:30
Wow. The first day of the tourney was once again amazing. Ohio pulled off an upset over Georgetown. I didn't think that would happen, but there was actually a likelihood of it happening. Georgetown is a terribly inconsistent team. They play some great games, and then they just slack off and lose to teams like Ohio.
My bracket is looking pretty good. I picked Old Dominion to upset Notre Dame and I also chose Murray St. to beat Vandy. My reason for picking Old Dom is that they are a good basketball team, and Notre Dame was just getting used to having Harangody. I chose Murray St. because they are an underrated team, Vanderbilt is overrated, and Vandy usually get upset in the first round. Danero Thomas hit the buzzer beater to send Murray St. to the top.
Villanova echoed many people's sentiments over their tournament play. They barely won in overtime. Texas and Wake Forest played out a great game as expected, and it was Wake that took the game in OT.Quincy Pondexter and Washington rallied by Marquette in an upset that wasn't really an upset.
The Arizona Diamondbacks gave star third baseman Mark Reynolds a three year deal worth 14.5 million overall. The Orlando Magic blew a lead, but still beat their state rivals in Miami in OT. Carmelo Anthony really wants to be the man of the day because he finally showed some big rebounding. Anthony had 26 points and 18 boards. Chris Bosh scored his milestone 10,000th point. Fans went nuts because he is the first Raptor in history to do so. The Portland Trail Blazers have the biggest idiot of an executive on their franchise. Their Vice President of Basketball Operations, Tom Penn, wants to fire Kevin Pritchard. Pritchard is one of the best GMs out there, and makes extremely smart decisions when he drafts. He built Portland into a playoff team, and your appreciation is to fire him! It is all jealousy. Penn feels that Pritchard is the number one and Penn is the number two. Penn wants to be the GM, and his only chance is to fire Pritchard.
The Cleveland Browns resigned offensive lineman Billy Yates. It is a solid move and can only help the team. The Philadelphia Eagles felt that they did not need Kevin Curtis anymore and released him. A team with the right system should find him as a solid receiver. The Eagles gave new defensive end Darryl Tapp a three year extension.
The rumor that the Seattle Seahawks were interested in backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst has proved to be true. The Hawks' organization made another bad move. Sure they needed a backup, but they gave a 2011 third round pick and they swapped second round picks moving the Seahawks down 20 places. This was all for a guy that has never thrown a pass in the NFL. They even immediately gave him a two year, 8 million dollar deal. The San Diego Chargers got some nice draft picks.
Former tight end superstar Algae Crumpler filled in a position of need for the New England Patriots. He spent the last two seasons in Tennessee backing up Bo Scaife and he was seldomly used. Crumpler is still a great presence in the locker room, and the deal makes sense on many grounds.
Anaheim Ducks defensman James Wisniewski was suspeneded eight games. The Penguins shutout the Bruins 3-0. The Hurricanes beat the Caps in overtime, although Ovechkin was serving his suspension. Paul Kariya scored his 400th career goal. The Predators blast and shutdown the Wild 5-0. The San Jose Sharks lost their fourth straight game. Jason Pominivlle had a hat trick in the Sabres' 6-2 victory over the Lightning.
I thought UTEP and San Diego State would make upset wins, but Butler and Tennessee were able to edge by. With that, it is time for me to announce my man of the day. Murray State's coach Billy Kennedy wanted Isaac Miles to be the go-to-guy. It didn't happen that way. Danero Thomas, the third option, hit the fifteen foot buzzer beater. Murray State won 66-65. So, Obama and I were both right. Thanks to you Thomas, and here's your Man of the Day Award. I love buzzer beater's, upsets that are not to my favorite teams, and special moments.
