3/20 Sports Review: Temple got Burned
So begins the NCAA tourney news. Jay Bilas was right, Yahoo Sports was wrong. Cornell not only beat temple for the upset, but they ripped them up. Who said Ivy league teams aren't athletic?
New Mexico State nearly became the next number twelve seed to beat a number five seed last night, but Michigan State held on. There was a lane violation call that sportswriter Chris Chase said was a horrible call. He argued that the call was rarely made in games, and should not have been made in a game-changing situation. Let me tell you something about Chase, he always does this. Chris Chase has become a cartoon because he always blames it on the refs when the team he wants to win loses. Just because they don't call it in other games does not mean they should not call it when it happens. It is the ref's judgement call, and he made a good call. Seriously, New Mexico State broke a rule with 18 seconds left. It has to be called. Anyway, congrats to NM State for a great game played, and I do wish for my Green to continue on in the tournament thanks to Kalin Lucas's 25.
Today's games were not as epic as yesterday's. Rick Pitino will have to wait next year as Cal beat Louisville 77-62. Well done. Wofford held it close with Wisconsin 53-49. Top seeds Syracuse, Duke, and West Virginia came away with wins in routes. Missouri made a minor upset on Clemson 86-78. Georgia Tech made a minor upset against Oklahoma State 64-59. Xavier won 65-49 thanks to 28 by Jordan Crawford. Pitt blew out Oakland 66-89. I can't believe people called that game an upset game before it was played. Lastly, Gonzaga came away 67-60 against Florida St.
The Arizona Cardinals signed disgruntled veteran linebacker Joey Porter to bolster that position. He had nine sacks last year, and still has game left in him. He received three years on his deal. The Tennessee Titans signed defensive end Jason Babin. The New York Jets signed linebacker and special teams star Lance Laury. The other New York team signed Jy Bond to punt. Bond is a former Australian Rules Football player.
There are two NFL rumors I want to get to. Tim Tebow is working out for the New England Patriots. That is smart because he can learn under Brady and will have no pressure as a backup. Then, he can move onto another team and start later on in his career, or he can be a lifetime backup. The Redskins, Seahawks, Bills, and Browns also scheduled meetings with him. Dolphins' quarterback Chad Henne said on a radio show that Tebow is not an NFL quarterback. That was unprofessional of Henne to say that. Who does he think he is to tell Tebow that? He has no business judging somebody else's talent, especially when he is not so good either. Henne should shut up and play. The man is quietly turning into one of the biggest enigmas in the league. Look at all his tactics last year.
The other rumor also deals with a quarterback, but a newly acquired one. Charlie Whitehurst of the Seattle Seahawks has never thrown a pass in a regular season game. However, he is actually competing with Matt Hasselbeck for the starting job. That is ridiculous, and all thanks to new NFL coach Pete Carroll. But hey, give him a chance. He has been a benchwarmer ever since 2006.
Stephen Strasburg- The Wonder Kid- continues on his rage. He struck out eight in four innings. He will be a superstar one day. What a monster. Legendary announcer- who really sucks at that job now- fell but was released from the hospital. Glad he's okay. A-Rod hit his first spring homer and CC Sabathia was once again sharp. I am hoping for a big season ahead for my Pinstripes.
LeBron James thinks that John Wall is a number one pick, but Kobe says Evan Turner is the top prospect. I take to agree with the more polished Turner, but Wall is right up there. It is a matter of preference I suppose, but I think LeBron does not need his agent to be on a recruit job. Both of them should focus on the NBA season.
Speaking of LeBron James, he became the youngest person in history to score 15,000 points in the Cavs' win. He broke Kobe's mark by more than two years. The Atlanta Hawks beat the Charlotte Bobcats 93-92 in Joe Johnson's return. In fact, Johnson hit the buzzer beater. The Celts unhanded the Rockets and Aaron Brooks's hot hand in a 94-87 win thanks to defense by Rondo and 26 points by The Truth.
Kevin Durant scored 31 points to get the Thunder a big 115-89 win over Bosh and the Raptors. Danny Granger scored 29 points in his return, and the Pacers beat the Pistons in a close one, 106-102.
The Spurs won 147-116 against the Warriors thanks to sharpshooting from beyond the arc. The Warriors have lost 24 straight to the Spurs. San Antonio scored the most points in a game since the Greg Popovich era began in 1996. Manu had 23 with 11 assists. The overcame a big night from Monta Ellis. Monta scored 39.
My Phoenix Suns beat out the tough Utah Jazz. It is a big win and a big loss for both teams respectively. Carlos Boozer had 23 points and 16 rebounds in the Jazz's 110-100 loss. That was not the big highlight of the game. Amare Stoudamire proved that he is invaluable down the stretch with his whopping 44 points with 7 rebounds. 44! That is awesome considering he is a power forward.
In hockey, Rick Nash scored two goals in his return. The Ducks beat the Islanders 5-4 in overtime. Brule helps Edmonton upset the Red Wings in a shootout. The Vancouver Canucks resigned superstar 25 year old center Ryan Kesler to a 6 year 30 million dollar deal.
I have now dubbed the Man of the Day Award the MDA. Stoudamire, James, Johnson, Boozer, Lucas, Strasburg, Granger, Durant, Ellis, Nash, and Brule all made strong cases. I love buzzer beaters, but the obvious choice is LeBron. 15,000 is a huge number, and two years on top of Kobe is no easy feat.
