3/23 Sports Review: Ilgauskas and More
March 23rd 2010 05:30
Without the NCAA Tourney, the news has run itself pretty dry. There are still important newsbits to discuss. Michigan State standout guard Kalin Lucas really has torn his Achilles tendon. He will miss the rest of the tournament during a time when his team will need him the most.
Tom Penders has left- as expected- Houston's college basketball team. He coached there for three years. Penders says he has no retirement plans and just wants a change of scenery. Big 12 Player of the Year James Anderson will skip his senior year at Oklahoma State and go to the NBA Draft. It is widely regarded that Anderson had the best three year career in Oklahoma State history. He truly was a dominant college basketball star.
Zydrunas Igauskas is probably going to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers again by this morning. He has a few offers from the Cavs that he can choose from. Z has the option of signing for the rest of the year, or for a few years extra. His agent does not want a long-term deal, but Ilgauskas does. Zydrunas Ilgauskas is the Cavs' franchise leader in rebounds, games played, and blocks. He is also second behind LeBron in scoring. Z will greatly improve the team's frontcourt once he signs a deal.
Running back Ronnie Brown was charged with DUI. The interesting thing is that this took place in Atlanta while he was celebrating his parents' anniversary. The New England Patriots will get four compensatory draft picks, which is the maximum. They will get one sixth round pick and three seventh round picks. They lost Heath Evans, Jabar Gaffney, Larry Izzo, LaMont Jordan, and Lonie Paxton before the 2009 season. The Panthers, Steelers, and Titans got 3 picks each.
Defensive end Corey Redding signed a two year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. The former Seahawk is good player and will make the Ravens' defensive line one of the most formidable in the league. They hope he will replace Dwan Edwards adequately and he will.
Justin Duchscherer is looking healthy and happy. However, it is only spring when there is no pressure. The injury prone and anxiety prone starting pitcher tossed four scoreless innings in his debut.
The New Orleans Hornets were able to take down the Dallas Mavericks in Chris Paul's return. Kevin Durant blew up and scored 45 points, yet the San Antonio Spurs still won. This was, of course, thanks to George Hill. Hill scored a career high 27 points last night.
The Utah Jazz were able to break up the Boston Celtic's four game winning streak. John Salmons scored 32, and his late free throws enabled the Bucks to squeak by Atlanta. The Orlando Magic got an easy 50th win of the year over the Philadelphia 76ers. Dwayne Wade led the Heat to another victory.
The Phoenix Suns outlasted the Golden State Warriors in an epic 133-131 contest. By the way, the Warriors are for sale and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is interested. Stephon Marbury's stint in China is going well for him. He was named an All Star and the MVP of the All Star game.
Flyers' star center and leading scorer Jeff Carter will miss three weeks with a broken foot. Zetterberg once again powered the Red Wings, this time by the rival Penguins. The Senators broke their five game losing streak with an Elliot shootout goal. The Colorado Avalanche put up an amazing fight in a nail-biter contest against the Los Angeles Kings. The Avalanche tied it at 3-3 with less than 10 seconds in regulation, but the Kings won it in overtime.
The MDA award today has a few big candidates. Salmons, Durant, and even Hill. The obvious choice and my choice goes to Kevin Durant. KD is one of my favorite basketball players and is a great guy. He also deserved it with a huge 45 point performance. At such a young age, we can expect more huge things from him for years and years to come. Durant will one day become one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. He is already one of the most prolific scorers today. By the way, KD is my early pick for this year's MVP. He leads the league in scoring, and he has really helped turn around the Thunder franchise into a playoff team.
