3/28 Sports Review: WVU?

Wow. What an NCAA tourney. This is the best one I have ever watched in my life. Yesterday's first Elite Eight action was incredible. Joe Mazzulla and West Virginia took down Kentucky. It wasn't an upset, but it was a huge win considering Kentucky were the favorites to take home the title.
Kentucky missed their first twenty three pointers. The 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists were all they could hope for. That was thanks to John Wall. West Virginia used their famed defense. They closed up the lanes so guys like John Wall couldn't drive, they would collapse three players into the post on DeMarcus Cousins every time he got the ball, and they fouled Kentucky's players if they were about to take an easy shot just to make them take free throws. That is really smart coaching Bob Huggins, especially when Kentucky only shot 16 for 29 from the free throw line. No wonder why UK got that St. Pierre punch out of the tourney.
Truck Bryant was injured, but Mazzulla did well in his first start of the year. He scored a career high 17 points. Da'Sean Butler and the rest are now in the Final Four where they will meet...
Butler is not a fluke. I said that yesterday talking to my friends, and I stand correct. I think I also said that Butler was a better team that everyone thinks yesterday. Anyway, Butler beat Kansas State 63-56 to take their business to the Final Four.
Butler overcame big man Curtis Kelly's 14 point and 5 rebound performance. In my opinion, Gordon Hayward is at least one of the top 25 players in the country. He is an excellent scorer and rebounder that gets little credit for what he does. Last night, he showed up to play once again scoring 22 points and 9 rebounds.
Ronald Nored and Willie Veasley played great defense against superstar guards Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente. That is incredible when you look at how great of a scorer Pullen is and how fast Clemente is. Ralph Nored is an amazing defensive players and shows great intangibles. He is invaluable to Butler, is a winner, and is a great leader. This is all according to what his great coach, Brad Stevens, said about him on Mike and Mike in the Morning. Butler have a great formula for success. Defense, a superstar player, a veteran guard in NCAA terms, a stingy defense, a great coach, and a great leader.
The Texas Rangers have named, ahem, Scott Feldman as their opening starter. If he's the best, then I want to see their worst. For those interested, it is Colby Lewis who has a career 6.71 ERA and .3-8 batting average against in 217.1 innings pitched. Feldman is no ace, but he at least won 17 games last season, which is more of a tribute to the Texas offense.
The Los Angeles Lakers beat the shorthanded Houston Rockets 109-101. Which technically means they played without Kevin Martin. Kobe Bryant went on a rampage with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. His sidekick, Pau Gasol, scored 30 with 9 rebounds. Luis Scola motored the Rockets with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Well, Darren Collison's 22 points and 5 assists didn't really matter for the Hornets yesterday. They were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in a 112-101 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. Brandon Roy led the charge to victory with 28 points and 7 assists.
So the Wizards want to bring back Arenas. Whatever, they still have their 15 game losing streak. 103-87 was the final blowout score for the Utah Jazz win. Carlos Boozer scored 22 points, gathered 10 boards, and dished out 6 assists. Andray Blatche did something for the Wizards with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists.
The Chicago Bulls routed the Nets 106-83. Hey, at least Chicago can beat them. Terrence Williams did have 16 points and 6 rebounds for the lovable losers. Jannero Pargo has always been a player I liked, and he had 27 points with 5 assists last night.
The MDA goes to Gordon Hayward. He led the Bulldogs to the Final Four offensively and scored 22 points with 9 rebounds against a tough Kansas State team. Hayward is one of the best players in college basketball, and the good people at home can now finally realize it.
