6/23 Moves: Maggette and Fredi
June 23rd 2010 15:42
This is breaking news. The Florida Marlins fired manager Fredi Gonzalez, bench coach Carlos Tosca, and hitting coach Jim Presley. Edwin Rodriguez will be the intern manager.
I think this is a stupid move. It just shows evidence of a deteriorating franchise and ownership. The Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has long sacrificed his wallet for the good of the team. They are amidst hoopla and treat their players poorly. Calling themselves the Miami Marlins doesn't make it a cute alliteration. It makes it a failing facade. This is a team that is subpar. People overrated them year in and year out. They were always meant to be a .495 team or so.
The Seattle Seahawks signed safety Kevin Ellison off of waivers just after the San Diego Chargers cut him. He was released after being arrested on the suspicion of having a banned substance.
Ellison- a rookie last year- was speeding near a school zone. That zone also happened to be near his former high school. He was released on a $10,000 bail. New Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was Ellison's former coach at USC. Maybe Carroll can drive some sense into the youngster.
The New Orleans Saints love to shed players from their roster. Playoff star defensive end Bobby McCray did well in the team's championship campaign last year. The big guy was cut.
The 28 year old was released because the Saints signed a bigger guy this offseason. That was former Chicago Bears star Alex Brown. They also picked up Jimmy Wilkerson- an inside and outside defensive lineman- earlier this offseason.
The Seattle Seahawks are also amidst a busy offseason. They made another move yesterday. It was pertaining to their front office; which has gone on a reconstruction so far. Former GM of the San Francisco 49ers Scot McCloughan was picked up to be a senior personnel executive.
The biggest news of the day was another NBA trade. Star small forward Corey Maggette was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Warriors also packaged a second round pick to acquire guard Charlie Bell and center Dan Gadzuric.
Maggette has a big contract, but he had substantially better statistics. He also way better. Bell and Gadzuric are mediocre players who had poor years last year. Maggette, however, averaged 20 points and 5 boards per game last year. He is a big-time scorer that can get to the rim.
The Bucks need the offense, especially because key small forward John Salmons could opt out of his contract. Now I think he would be crazy to do that with his newfound scoring opportunities and money in Milwaukee, but you never know.
Maggette had a field goal percentage of .516 last year. Corey is also a swingman- meaning that he also plays shooting guard. Charlie Bell wanted a change of scenery. The fans liked him more than the organization did.
Overall the Bucks got a way better deal than the Warriors. I give Maggette a B and the pick a D. Bell is a C- and Gadzuric is also a D. They aren't bad players, but they aren't exactly good either. The NBA is also full of stars, we can't call the mediocre players good.
