6/24 Moves: NHL Awards and Trades

June 24th 2010 15:03
Star forward Dustin Byfuglien scored 11 goals in the playoffs for the championship Blackhawks. The Atlanta Thrashers made the smart move to acquire him. D Brent Sopel and F Ben Eager were also acquired by Atlanta. Akim Aliu was also dealt to Atlanta. He is a Right Wing prospect.

The Blackhawks get the first and second round picks in this week's draft. The first rounder is the 24th pick. Marty Reasoner, Joey Crabb, and Jeremy Morin. Those three are scrubs.

I think it was a horrible deal for Chicago. Byfuglien scored three game winners in the playoffs. Sure he was mediocre in the regular season, but he is better than the junk they got. The Hawks also gave up three players. They shed payroll, but also gave away a 25 year old for junk. They have to have a great draft to justify this trade.

I am happy that Duncan Keith- also for the Blackhawks- won the Norris Trophy for top defenseman. I picked Henrik Sedin to win the MVP and I was right. He deservedly beat out Ovechkin. Ryan Miller easily won the Vezina for top goaltender. Rightfully so.

Pavel Datsyuk continued his excellence and status as a class act. He won the Lady Byng trophy for the most gentlemanly player. Datsyuk also won the Selke Trophy for the best defensive forward. This was his third year in a row that he received the honor.

For the third straight year, Alexander Ovechkin won the Lindsay Award. This is given by the NHLPA to the most outstanding player deemed by them. It is his third straight year winning that award.

Goaltender Jose Theodore finally got the award he deserved. He won the Masterton Trophy. It is given to the player that shows the most perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. He really does deserve it. Those are the qualities he shows each day.

The Miami Heat shaved off payroll. However, they made an awful deal in doing so. Get this, they traded the 18th pick in the draft and sharpshooting guard Daequan Cook to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 32nd round pick. The Heat now have four second round choices.

They give up the first rounder because they didn't have the cap to sign that pick either. Granted, by cap I mean cap hold. They are holding out a ton of their money for a big free agent. If they don't get any, then too bad for them. This trade will only sound not stupid if they get a Chris Bosh or something along those lines.

Now the Thunder got a huge deal off. At number 18, they can continue their drafting success and get somebody else good. These guys are potent on draft day; Durant, Westbrook, and Green. Cook also brings solid talent and a stellar 3-ball. Cook has one a 3-point shootout at the All-Star Game before. The Thunder are in such a great position. They still have a second rounder at 51, but they also have three first rounders now. Watch out NBA!

Here is a good MLB trade. The Baltimore Orioles got versatile utility man Jake Fox from the Oakland Athletics. Fox is young and can play so many positions. Corner outfield, corner infield, second, and catcher. You name it. Fox has good power and was coveted last year by the Cubs.

The O's traded horrible reliever Ross Wolf. Baltimore won that deal by a mile. Wolf will turn 28 on the 18th of October. Fox will turn 28 on July 20th. Ross Wolf has only pitched 12.1 career major league innings. He is so pathetic that they came in 2007 with the Florida Marlins.

Tommy Everidge was traded to the Houston Astros for future considerations. The first baseman saw limited action in 2009 with the A's. The Mariners were the ones that traded him away. Tommy has not played yet in 2010. He is 28.

The Yankees look like geniuses now that you look back on when they traded reliever Brian Bruney to the Nationals for the 1st pick in the Rule 5 Draft. That turned out to be Jamie Hoffman- a decent prospect. The Brewers acquired him and had enough. Bruney was cut and is now a free agent.

The O.J. Atogwe madness is over. The St. Louis Rams resigned him to a multi-year deal which ended the dispute. Speaking of the Rams, former Rams star quarterback Marc Bulger finally found a team. The Baltimore Ravens made the smart move to sign Bulger as a backup to star youngster Joe Flacco.

Bulger signed a one year deal which is smart and risk free. Interestingly enough, the Rams youngster quarterback's- Sam Bradford- backup is Kyle Boller. Boller used to start for the Ravens, but Boller was different. He was a bad QB.

Quick Fact. Marc Bulger was the fifth fastest player in NFL history to throw 20,000 passing yards. It took him only 81 games to do so. If injuries didn't derail his career, we would be looking at a top five quarterback for sure.
Henrik Sedin
2009-2010 NHL MVP
