7/17: Baseball Notes

July 17th 2010 14:18
This season has made me feel righteous. A few years ago, I told everybody that Joba Chamberlain was overrated and that I would much rather have Phil Hughes. They all looked at me like I was crazy. When the Yanks traded Austin Jackson in the Curtis Granderosn deal, I said that I would rather have traded Joba instead. Look whose playing better in both cases.

What I'm saying is that Joba is not a dominant set-up man at all. People thought he had a good year last year. Well does a 1.54 WHIP look good? This year has been less tantalizing. He has more blown saves than saves, a 1-4 record, an opponents BA of .282, a 1.50 WHIP, and an outstandingly terrible 5.79 ERA. I really think the Yankees should deal him for a starting pitcher or reliever on the market. Not Matt Capps, but a good starter or elite reliever.

In the Alex Gonzalez-Yunel Escobar swap, with some junk, the best player in the deal is not Alex. Well sure he's having a great year, but this is an anomaly. In truth, Alex Gonzalez is nothing but a mediocre hitter with spectacular defense. However, Escobar is just as stellar defensively and he can produce runs.

Yunel Escobar is having a down year this year because the Braves did not use him right in the order. He is not a power hitter, although he has as much pop as Gonzalez when he isn't slumping, he is a contact hitter with speed that can produce runs. Gonzalez is a career .248 hitter with only one season over 20 dingers. Yunel is a career .291 hitter that has more speed. Escobar is also much younger and has much more upside. Nicely done Toronto, you bagged a young talent.

I actually loved the Cliff Lee deal for the Seattle Mariners. They knew they would never resign Lee nor make the playoffs this year. What they did was genius. They cleared off oft-injured reliever Mark Lowe, and added one of the best prospects in baseball. Justin Smoak may be their most talented power bat.

Everybody says that Prince Fielder is in a homer slump and Adrian Gonzalez is on a tear in homers. What if I told you that has 20 compared to Ad's 19. What if I also told you that Aramis Ramirez has 11 homers compared to All-Star teammate Marlon Byrd's 10. Did you also know that Michael Bourn has as many steals as Rajai Davis?
