Back to David Stern
May 23rd 2010 16:48
I ranted on NBA Commissioner David Stern in an earlier post here Really Long Link
He said he wished that players like LeBron James stuck with their respective franchises. Well, Mark Cuban said that the Dallas Mavericks would be in the LeBron race if James asked the Cavs to do a sign and trade.
Cuban was fined 100K for his comments on CNNMoney.com because it was tampering. Yes, Cuban was tampering but what Stern did was worse. He tampered while being the commissioner. Wow. How hypocritical can you get these days? According to Stern, it can always be worse. I honestly think that Stern's opinion with tampering charges should be treated as a grain of salt in most cases. I say most because there will always be a few knuckleheads that come up with something else.
The Orlando Magic are on the verge of a sweep after they got shredded 94-71. You really can't afford to lose by 23, and now be down 3-0. Dwight Howard only scored 7 points, shot 25 percent from the line, and shot a horrendous 30 percent from the floor. Nice job star. Howard played 39:24.
The lone bright spot for Orlando was Vince Carter, who scored 15 points with 5 rebounds and only turned the ball over twice. Jameer Nelson had only one assist, especially compared to a whopping 4 turnovers.
On the other side, Glen Davis shot 5-9 and scored 17 off the bench. Rajon Rondo had a double-double with 11 points, 12 assists and added four steals. Ray Allen turned in a well-rounded performance with 6 rebound, 6 assists, and 14 points.
With all those stats in mind, it is a wonder if the Magic can take things back in game 4 in Boston. No way. The C's are in the finals. The Suns won't beat the Lakers, but they won't be as abysmal. No NBA team in history has came back from a 3-0 series deficit and won the series.
Well, the Canadiens are also on the verge of a series loss, being down 3-1. Michael Leighton came back after letting in 5 goals in Game 3, and shut out the Habs as he did in the first two games. Chris Pronger had an assists, Matt Carle played tough D, and Claude Giroux continued his tear as he banked two .
Daisuke Matsuzaka nearly threw a no-hitter. He tossed 7 2/3 of no-hit ball against the Philadelphia Phillies. What a job well done, and a great bounce back to shut down a powerhouse. The 5-0 win was helped by Adrian Beltre, who went 2-4 with 2 Steaks. Juan Castro recorded the only hit for the Phils.
Daniel Bard pitch a scoreless ninth after Dice-K's eight innings of one hit ball. The problem was, he walked four batters, which is even worse when you look at his 5 K's. Jacoby Ellsbury walked and scored a run in his return from the DL. Red Sox ace Josh Beckett will come off the DL right when he is eligible. You know Francona, there is such thing as day-to-day. Oh well, better safe than sorry.
Roy Oswalt has demanded a trade, and he has pitched magnificently thus far. There is a contender that wants him, just not right at this very moment. Wait till June, the phones will be ringing in Houston. Michael Bourn argued with an umpire at first, so he will be suspended one game.
Jimmy Rollins injured his calf again, and will be back on the disabled list. The Chicago Cubs took the Texas Rangers to ten innings, and Piniella's gang won it and stopped the winning streak for Texas at 5.
My New York Yankees lost to the Mets 5-3. Mike Pelfrey struck out five and gave up just one run over six innings, while Phil Hughes gave up eight hits and four runs over 5.2 innings. At least the Yankees' youngster struck out seven.
K-Rod got the five out save, and struck out two in the process. Nick Swisher went 3-4, Angel Pagan went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, but Jason Bay was the star of the night going 4-4 with 3 runs.
On a sad note, Hall of Fame offensive lineman Stan Jones died at the age of 78. He transformed himself from being skinny and weighing just 140 pounds, to becoming a 6-foot-1, 265 pound HOF OL. He also coached for two decades, including 18 years with Denver.
Jones was a stud for the Chicago Bears in the 50's and 60's. He was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The strip above is now dedicated to Stan Jones. He was a first-team All-Pro twice, and was a favorite with fans as he was elected to 7 pro bowls. He played from 1954-1965 with the Bears and ended his career in 1966 with the Washington Redskins. That was the only year Stan played for the Skins.
He was just a fifth rounder in the 1953 NFL Draft. Alan Faneca, Tom Nalen, Tarik Glenn, HOF Gene Hickerson, and HOF Joe DeLamielleure are players compared to him.
