Joe Calzaghe dominates Roy Jones and wins a Unanimous decision.
November 9th 2008 06:13
Joe Calzaghe was knocked down by Roy Jones Jr. in the first round, which seemed to make Calzaghe angry, because he dominated the fight from that moment forward. Calzaghe threw his traditional heavy volume of punches, threw 985 punches by Compubox numbers, landing 384 of them, or 35%. Roy Jones, in comparison, threw less than half as many punches, landing 159, or 33%. Calzaghe applied relentless pressure immediately after he regained his senses after the first round knockdown. He started taunting Jones early in the fight by dancing in the ring and standing in front of him with his hands down and continued to the end, daring Jones to hit him; but Jones could not respond. The beginning of the end for Jones was in the 7th round when Calzaghe opened a cut above Jones's eye, which Jones's trainers tried in vain to close, but could not. Jones fought out the fight from there, but he was never a serious threat to Calzaghe. This may be the end for both fighters. Both are up in years. Jones will struggle to get a fight, and he looked washed up at the end. Calzaghe is undefeated and has faced all of his major challenges. There are some still ahead, but the question for Calzaghe will be whether he wants to jeopardize his legacy by fighting a young up and coming fighter, or if he would rather retire as an undefeated champion.
