Cardinals Trade Ludwick
August 1st 2010 15:12
The St. Louis Cardinals received starting pitcher Jake Westbrook from the Cleveland Indians and traded star outfielder Ryan Ludwick to the Padres. The Cards and Padres got cash from Cleveland, with a little help from Westbrook. After this year, Jake will become a free agent.
The Cardinals received pitching prospect Nick Greenwood from San Diego, and the Indians received prospect Corey Kluber from the Padres. I love the deal for San Diego. They give up two prospects for Ludwick. The Cardinals made a slightly below average deal. Ludwick has more years on his contract and is better than Westbrook. The prospect is just not enough to cover that up. The Indians, of course, had no choice but to get ripped off. Hey, at least they got a prospect instead of nothing!
The New York Yankees finally found a reliable set-up man. The Indians traded another pitcher- Kerry Wood- and the Yankees acquired another star. The Yankees sent either 500K or a player to be named. Hopefully for the Yanks, it is money. Wood has an 11 million dollar option for next year. He would be crazy not to take it. It was a good deal for both teams. Cleveland was looking to dump Wood off. They love Chris Perez.
The Los Angeles Dodgers finally got Ted Lilly. It was also no surprise that Blake DeWitt was a big part of the trade. What caught some of us off guard was that they also received Ryan Theriot.
The Dodgers also sent pitching prospects Kyle Smit and Brett Wallach. The Dodgers were also given 2.5 million dollars to help pay Lilly's salary. That was actually a key part in the trade getting done. I love how the Dodgers were aggressive to improve their pitching.
The Atlanta Braves made a free agent move. They realized that to keep on being serious contenders and to stave off the Phillies; they need some help. They traded awful reliever Jesse Chavez, decent backup OF Gregor Blanco, and pitching prospect Tim Collins to the Kansas City Royals.
What they got was power hitting outfielder Rick Ankiel, and fastball favoring reliever Kyle Farnsworth. Ankiel makes the outfield a little bit crowded, but that never hurt anyone. It gives them more options. As does the option of a power pitcher in the pen. I like the deal for the Braves just because they gave up garbage for decent players.
The Tampa Bay Rays added to an already stacked bullpen. In fact, they got the biggest prize on the bullpen trade market. The Diamondbacks continued their roster upheaval by trading Chad Qualls; as expected. What was not expected was that the Rays would make the push to acquire him. He was traded for a player to be named. I love the deal for Arizona, because they need to rebuild and they didn't want to keep Qualls anyway.
The D'backs also traded unnecessary backup catcher Chris Snyder to the Pittsburgh Pirates. They also said bye to Pedro Ciriaco and cash. The Pirates traded Bobby Crosby, Ryan Church, and DJ Carrasco.
The Diamondbacks got another incredible deal done. They acquired three quality players for one decent guy and one subpar prospect. I think Carrasco will really help their bullpen out.
The Orioles traded decent reliever Will Ohman to the Marlins for starting pitcher Rick VandenHurk. I like it for the Marlins because they were looking thin in the bullpen.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia was finally given a ticket out of Arlington. He actually reaped a nice price from Boston. Pitching prospect Roman Mendez, 1B prospect Chris McGuiness, a player to be named, and cash. Great job Texas!
The Tigers traded Wilkin Ramirez to the Braves for a player to be named. Decent reliever Ramon Ramirez was traded by the Red Sox to the Giants for Daniel Turpen.
The Pirates got a great deal off. The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired a different former White Sox reliever that played for the Pirates this year- see Carrasco above- this one was Pirates closer Octavio Dotel. He is good, but the Pirates really got a ton.
Pittsburgh have been long known for being on the bad end of trades, not this trade. However, the one above was a different story. Anyway, the Dodgers traded promising young pitcher James McDonald and top outfield prospect Andrew Lambo.
