Coach Carter breaks them down

Being a military man I loved to see Coach Carter basically lay the ground work for how he was going to be coaching his team. He let his players know right off the bat that we are going to work and work hard in practice. You see in the Army you are expected to be a team. If one person fails you all fail. Coach Carter felt that way about his team and he had to show that in order to win you had to do so as a team. So he had to break down the individuals.
His players ran and ran and ran and when they were done running they took a break and did some push ups. I remember those days very well. It's simple really, for those that wanted to really play ball they would have to deal with all the running and if you quit, well I guess you didn't want it that bad. In the end a young man's desire to play a wonderful game and be part of something special is going to win out.
After he broke his team down and got rid of all the barriers he was free to build them back up into his team and teach how to play basketball as a team. He also got it in their heads that playing ball is not the most important things around. It is a privilege, not a right to be able to put on a uniform and they had to earn it in the classroom.
This movie is just all around a good one because it sends the right message and I for one am glad to sit and watch it every once in a while. Can't wait to watch it with my boys when they are old enough.
