D'Backs Retire Jersey
August 8th 2010 13:27
Most people are discussing the tributes made to super-legends Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice. We knew they deserved a spot in the Hall, but we also knew they were going to be inducted. What we didn't follow was the Arizona Diamondbacks retiring their first jersey in franchise history.
Luis Gonzalez. Many remember him as the guy who hit the game winning single off Mariano Rivera to win the classic 2001 World Series. Now that's incredible considering that Rivera is the best closer in MLB history.
Not only did he accomplish that, but he also won the home run derby and had many incredible seasons. Gonzo had an incredible combination of power and contact. He finished his career with 1,412 runs, 2,591 hits, 596 doubles, 354 homers, and 1,439 RBIs. That is extremely impressive. He is certainly a Hall of Famer that displayed incredible character. He still is a good guy.
Gonzalez went to five All Star games, won the Branch Rickey Award, he also won the Silver Slugger Award once. He has the 49th most total bases in history, the 15th most doubles, the 78th most hits, the 84th most runs, the 75th most dingers, the 65th most walks, the 60th most RBIs, the 28th most extra base hits, and the 53rd most times on base. Those are pretty impressive statistics.
I hope I see Gonzo in the Hall. He already has great numbers, a ring, and a retired jersey. Not to mention that jersey was the first ever retired by a franchise. The picture is from Sports Illustrated.
