Draft Notes
April 25th 2010 23:59
O.J. is going to do a full-blown draft review. I am just here for the notes. In the coming you will here a lot of Panthers stuff and key things to think about in the draft.
Jimmy Clausen's drop was predicted by the best guru in the world. Todd McShay. The McBoard had him in the second round. This was because nobody in the first round really had their eyes set on him. He dropped to my Carolina Panthers as the 48th pick. I think Clausen can make a good impact as a rookie and will be a quality starter for years to come.
Carolina didn't exactly draft three quarterbacks. Third rounder Armanti Edward- I don't get why Hurney made the always aggressive move to deal next year's second rounder for him- is going to be a wildcat guy. Edwards will pass, run, and receive. Tony Pike was drafted as insurance. I like the new core Carolina now have.
Rolando McClain will be one of the greats in his career. He is an outstanding linebacker that plays hard every down. I also think Gerald McCoy will be the better player than Ndamukong Suh. Suh will be great, no doubt. However, I really like McCoy's abilities as a pass rusher.
The Buffalo Bills will pay for drafting C.J. Spiller. Don't get me wrong, I love Spiller. He is one of my favorite players and he is incredible. But the Bills passed up on huge needs at the offensive line to draft him.
Tim Tebow was drafted in the first round. I really don't care about that. McDaniels likes him. So be it. We've seen Joshie transform quarterbacks before. DeMaryius Thomas was the great pick. They already traded the talents of Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler because of their behavior issues. McDaniels doesn't want to deal with character issues anymore. He chose Thomas over Bryant because of Bryant's issues. DeMaryius Thomas is still a great receiver. He isn't as incredible as Dez, but he is noteworthy and has number one caliber potential.
The whole theme of the draft was character. Teams wanted to draft the 'good guys' rather than the problematic enigmas that have hurt franchises. You look at what is going on with the divas in Pittsburgh. Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes have really damaged their reputations in this league. Their talents are unquestionable, but they have the uncanny knack to get themselves in sticky situations.
A big head scratcher was the number ten pick. Tyson Alulau is a good player, but he is not a top ten guy that should get the money for a number ten pick. The Jaguars liked him and his great leadership, but they overdrafted him.
The San Francisco 49ers did a great job in getting Mike Iupati. He was one of the two star offensive lineman selected by them in the first round to bolster a weak O-Line. I don't get the one from Rutgers.
Anthony Davis is a great talent. He is a first round talent. The 49ers really liked him. He doesn't work hard, but he is great. I had no problem with him going eleventh. He can bust, but he can also become really incredible. However, they moved up ten spots when there was no reason too. The Chargers already overpaid to secure Ryan Mathews.
As far as pure running backs go, Mathews was the best one in the draft. However no running back- unless they are really incredible- should go in the top 20 in a draft. Running back is a pretty easy position to replace. I know the Chargers really liked and needed him. However, they should have been more patient.
I really think Mike Holmgren can make Colt McCoy a special quarterback. He wouldn't fit on any team but the Browns. The Houston Texans picked Kareem Jackson over Kyle Wilson. Jackson is good, but Wilson is too great to pass up on. At least they didn't go Devin McCourty like the Patriots did. The New York Jets ended up getting a steal with Wilson at the 29th pick. The Jets now have an incredible corner back rotation of 3 that is easily the best in the NFL. Do you really want to face Cromartie, Revis, and Wilson?
Brandon LaFell was picked in the third round by the Carolina Panthers. He was a good deal at that pick. Just two years ago, LaFell was ranked as a first round pick. If he can finally put it together again, he will be a bargain. He looks like this year's DeSean Jackson boom or bust pick.
Greg Hardy is another LaFell. A guy that severly dropped after two years. He has behavior issues, but I like him more than the guy drafted in the second round, four rounds before Hardy. Terrence Cody. Mount Cody is big. That's the problem. He isn't quick enough so Cody will take too many plays off. Even though Carlos Dunlap has behavior problems, he is the obviously better choice.
The 49ers and Mike Singletary always loved Taylor Mays. The USC product is a physical freak. I think Singletary can coach him to his best and he will greatly compliment Patrick Willis.
Eric Berry and Earl Thomas could end up being the two best playmakers in this draft. They are both incredible safeties that cover so much ground and are so talented. They can do nearly whatever is asked.
The Seattle Seahawks were huge winners in this year's draft. They traded for Leon Washington and LenDale White, two great running backs. I'll get into trades tomorrow because this post will be too long in the end. The Seahawks drafted the safest pick and the replacement for probable retiree first ballot Hall of Famer Walter Jones. I expect good things out of Russell Okung. This guy is guaranteed not to bust. The Seahawks also got Earl Thomas as mentioned above.
Brandon Graham probably has the best immediate impact of a lot of players in this draft. He is small and quick off the first step. Graham will step in as a pass rusher for the Eagles. He has a chance to be elite, but he will be good.
The best defensive end in the draft is Derrick Morgan. The Tennessee Titans smartly drafted him. Morgan is a big guy. He won't be as spectacular as Graham could be, but will be solid and play for a while. This guy will not bust.
Jason Pierre-Paul's drafting puts a lot more uncertainty on Osi Umenyiora's status with the Giants. Jason is a big boom or bust guy. If he booms, he will blossom into an athletic monster. He is gifted with talent. Can he put it together? That is the real question Shakespeare.
I told you so. Maurkice Pouncey was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is what makes Pouncey so great. He can play every position on the offensive line, no lie. This makes them so much better at that position. Pouncey is the guy to make this offensive line elite. Yes, the Steelers' O-Line is finally elite with the addition of a guy that can play every position on the line. He has a good 15 year career ahead of him. He is another guarantee to not bust.
You may think a first round tight end is a reach. Not when your the playmaking TE desperate Cincinnati Bengals. Jermaine Gresham was top pick Sam Bradford's favorite target in college. Gresham is a beastly playmaker that can be an Antonio Gates.
Bryan Bulaga was passed up on, but not because of his skills. I think people just forgot about him. Anyway, he is the second best offensive lineman besides Okung in this draft. The Green Bay Packers got great fortune in drafting the stud at the 23rd pick. Bulaga will help a horrible O-Line and turn them into a decent one. Breathe a sigh of relief there Aaron Rodgers.
The Dallas Cowboys and Tony Romo really want to break records with the addition of stud Dez Bryant. Can they handle the ego or will this turn into the cry over Terrell Owens episode?
Dan Williams was a good steal in the late first round by the Arizona Cardinals. Jahvid Best will prove to be the playmaker Kevin Smith never was. Best has boom or bust in him, but is better than most running backs in this draft. In fact, he is the third best RB.
