Football Talk and an Apology
I mean to write some recap posts for Friday and Saturday night games, but a problem occurred. There was an error that would not allow me to access the website. I know that excuses are unacceptable alternatives to performance. I want to write this post about recent NFL news and rumors.
The NFL may change the overtime rule for the playoffs. The pending rule would have both teams getting the ball at least once, unless the first team to get the ball scores a touchdown. If the first team hits a field goal and the other team ties it up, then the game would keep on going until a team scored again. In order for this rule to be enacted over the first team to score wins rule, two-thirds of the NFL teams would have to agree to the rule. This is huge news, and it really does not effect the game-play that much. Its really only for sour-grape Vikings fans.
The Bills did not offer a contract to their receiver Terrell Owens. He was awful this year. TO was not as enigmatic as he was in Philadelphia or Dallas, but he did not play well enough to justify his contract. The Vikings and coach Brad Childress are waiting on a Favre decision. This means that they are either happy with Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson, or they are very certain that Favre is going to come back. It seems like they will not draft a quarterback.
Many people had a reoccurring thought in their heads after the release of LaDainian Tomlinson. They thought that Darren Sproles would be slated as the starter. However, he will become a free agent. The Chargers have decided not to tender him a contract. They will now have to draft a running back, unless they want Michael Bennett-shudder- starting.
Mike Shanahan says that the Redskins will tender a contract to Jason Campbell. However, the head coach would not commit to the quarterback as a starter. Shanahan says that he is still evaluating Campbell. Skins' owner Dan Snyder tried to obtain Mark Sanchez and Jay Cutler last offseason. It is ludicrous that the Deadskins have not cemented him as a starting QB. Campbell has good arm strength, he is strong, he is athletic, he rarely gets sacked, and he consistently posts solid numbers. The most amazing thing is, his offensive line is horrendous.
Remember when Osi Umenyiora said that he was going to retire if he was not started or traded? Well the old fart in New York, Tom Coughlin, won't even start him! Osi is one of the top defensive linemen in this league. It is nonsense that he was benched in the first place. I mean, Mathias Kiwanuka is a linebacker by trait in the first place. They can move him there at the position they need help at. Nothing against Coughlin- I think he is one of the best coaches of all time- but he really needs to put his ego behind him. So does Osi, but moreso to Coughlin.
An interesting trade rumor surrounding Jason Campbell is a possible deal to the Buffalo Bills. He could be shipped for Donte Whitner and a draft pick. The Redskins are interested in drafting either Jimmy Clausen, or Sam Bradford if Bradford is still available.
The Chicago Bears seam interested in acquiring defensive end Julius Peppers. The star had a great year forcing five fumbles and he also had 10.5 sacks. However, the Bears will most likely have to pay Peppers 15 million each year.
Safety Ryan Clark would become a free agent on March 5th. The Pittsburgh Steelers want to extend him. The Steelers have already done well in giving stud run-stuffer Casey Hampton an extension, and in franchising kicker Jeff Reed. Clark doesn't want to become a free agent, so he is offering a discount.
An interesting rumor circulating a few roundtable discussions is the prospect of LT going to the Saints. New Orleans is probably going to let running back Mike Bell become a restricted free agent. Brees wants to play with his old teammate in San Diego, but consider this more of speculation than something likely to happen. But don't rule out anything.
My last rumor has something to do with the draft. It also has to do with Sam Bradford and the St. Louis Rams. ESPN says that the Rams will invest their future in Bradford and take him with the number one overall pick. The Detroit Lions are expected to take DTs Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy. I personally would pick McCoy because he is the better pass rushers. He is only slightly better, but pass rushing means a ton in the draft.
