Hot Topics: A-Rod and Favre

August 4th 2010 18:37
First off, if you hate A-Rod and your just biased that way just shut up. I for one am sick of everybody whining like a bunch of little kids saying "steroids". What babies some of you are. So what he took steroids. A lot of other people did. Besides, he only took steroids for a few years. They only helped him get a few homers. Like what, maybe twenty in his career at most.

A-Rod only used steroids with the Rangers because of the pressure. He did not know how to handle it, so he trusted the wrong guy. You have to feel bad for him. That unnecessary mistake really hurt him. I mean, if I was a young player I would be tricked into it too.

Think about it, where steroids everything? Think about this too. A certain type of bat is "performance enhancing". Heck, that could be just as much of a difference. Performance enhancing is such a loose term. In a sense, common things like water and glasses are performance enhancing. Claritin is a PED. Seriously, people call any drug that enhances performance a PED. Well Claritin is a drug and enhances performance.

Some may argue that Claritin is over the counter. Most of the other PEDs are over the counter. I could just walk over to CVS and get them. I could drink and chomp on all the banned substances I ever wanted. So what is the difference? What is the difference between Andro and Big Papi's eyedrops. What is the difference between Andro and beer?

Did you know that Babe Ruth used to drink beer before baseball games? He said it improved his game. I fully believe him without a doubt. A hot dog has protein. It will change how you play. Look at energy drinks too.

You may argue that Andro is more powerful, but it is much easier to use non banned substances. Let me give you an analogy here. The American Heart Association said that saturated fat is actually more harmful to the body than trans fat because saturated fat is easier to find in foods. This is the same with performance enhancing substances.

Do steroids make 600 homers less amazing? No way! 600 in a career. Only seven players in history have done so. A-Rod is also the youngest one. That makes him far better. By the way, two others in the 600 club have also used steroids. A-Rod's accomplishment is incredible. Don't diminish it. Enjoy it. Cherish it.

On to Brett Favre. Favre is a legend. I am pretty sick of this stupid soap opera. It's caused by the media, not Favre! He never said he would retire in the first place! It was all some stupid report! No decision has been made, and hopefully he will be back. I think he will be.

Comment by Winless In Seattle

Before I start this comment - I'd like to say that I do not like ARod. Never have. Even when he was here in Seattle. He always came across as a cocky, arrogant, selfish guy. He's done, or said, nothing over the years since then to change my opinion. He's probably even solidified it. Call me biased if you will - but I think we both know I'm also in the majority (media, fans, players, coaches, etc). Please show me something good that ARod has done for others - not himself - whether it be for community or team. You'll have trouble finding anything - if you ever do.

Now... where to start on your post.

Maybe we could start with your "maybe 20" remark. I suppose that assumes that you believe he only took them during the time he admitted to? Big assumption on a guy that took so long to tell the "truth" in first place. But let's stick with the 3-year period he admitted to - he hit 52, 57 (his career high), and 47 HR, for a total of 156. And he's only topped 47 two other times in his entire career. So I'd say your "guess" of 20 may be slightly low. About 136 low.

I don't even want to get into you comparing water, glasses, Claritin, beer, hot dogs and energy drinks to steroids, well, because that's the most asinine thing I've ever heard. And I don't feel like explaining the difference to you.

Same goes for your question: "What's the difference between Andro and beer". Again, is this a serious post or are you just trying to get people riled up?

I agree - steroids alone don't make the 600 HR any less amazing. But the combination of ARod's attitude (to the media and to his peers), the fact that more people are closing in on the number - lessening the feat, and his contrived confession (which came only after he was publically outed in a SI article) of using steroids lessen it. For sure. Not to mention even in his confession you'll notice he blamed the "pressure", the "culture", the "era" and the "league" never himself. That's pretty manly. They aren't even celebrating this in NY, honestly. And that says a lot.

Favre is a legend, sure... but aren't you attempting to be the "stupid media" that you call out? If you're pretty sick of the soap opera why are you posting about it and making it your Hot Topics headline? And yes, he's publically retired several times. Only to come back and play. Each time. Remember the tears? If you don't remember them, Google "Favre retirement speeches" and refresh your memory. I cast him in the same shadow as LeBron James now - he needs the attention more than he needs the sport. Do I think he'll play this year? No. Would I bet the farm on it? No. He's been in this same situation (several) times before and history says he'll play. But I just hink his body is truly done this time.

In the end - I hope you don't take offense to anything I've written here, and if anything, I hope it creates some lively, worthwhile (even if heated), discussion. Afterall, if we didn't have thick skin and opinions - we wouldn't have much fun doing this.

Thanks!

No offense taken. Thanks for the rather lengthy comment. I sure as heck would hate it if we all agreed on everything. The A-Rod part was mere skepticism on my part. I was trying to be different and put some information out in a new way.

With the Favre part, I decided not to write too much about it. I may be part of the "stupid media". So call me that. I don't care. I can take that unlike some people. This Favre stuff is a hot topic. Writing about it was the only way to make my paragraph of a statement. I wrote about it because it is important, but I didn't elaborate because that would be really annoying.

Ok - cool. I figured you'd take it as I intended and not get upset! Thanks for that!

Also - I went easy on you based on your profile picture

Yeah, at least that member of the 600 club that played in the 90s and 2000s didn't take steroids. I wish Griffey didn't get those injuries, he could have out homered Bonds. If you think about it, he was still better than Bonds.
