Looking at the NFL
August 2nd 2010 14:19
Just to sum it up in two words, I'm excited. Every year in August, I glue my eyes to the computer screen and read about football. Even without a CBA, the NFL is still the best thing to follow and watch on TV. Each day there is another storyline. Moreno's injury, Derrick Burgesses's possible retirement, and everything else that goes on.
When you look at running backs in the NFL, you start to see that nearly every NFL team has a timeshare at the position. The only star that will have no timeshare is Chris Johnson. Ringer and Blount? Seriously? Those guys are third string running backs in the league today.
Now these third stringers are very important. Running back injuries are extremely common in the NFL. Look at the Broncos. The injury bug bit stars like Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno. Their next best guy is Kolby Smith. He's not the guy you ideally want on the football field in a big game. There are only 16 of them each year. Every game is a big game.
The St. Louis Rams are still a mess. The BP oil spill just barely beat these clowns out for the worst mess these past three years. Is Sam Bradford this year better than Marc Bulger? Honestly, no. I mean, people forget that Bulger was once a star. Bulger in 2006 was as good as Tom Brady last year.
The Rams have no pass rush and a bunch of terrible corners. How can you win if you can't stop the other team from scoring 30 points? Their receivers- besides Donnie Avery- are all amongst the worst in the league. I can't believe they call some of their players starters! Steven Jackson is the only big game player on the team. The only other aspects of the Rams I like are the LBs and Atogwe.
If John Fox gets fired, I will write a post on how much I hate my favorite team's management. Did I mention I met Fox in person? He is a great guy and a very knowledgeable coach. In fact, when he was the defensive coordinator for the Giants- he made an incredible prediction.
The Giants were in the playoffs- NFC Championship game- and they were about to face the Minnesota Vikings. Yup, the team with Moss; Culpepper; and everyone else. The best offense in the NFL. Heck, one of the best offenses in history.
One of the front office guys, Ernie Accorsi, is really nervous. He thinks that they are going to get blown out. However, Fox says that they might somehow shutout the Vikings. That's like shutting out the Saints last year in the playoffs. Almost impossible. Well they do. 41-0. John Fox, Sehorn, and the defense completely shut them down, and the O drop 41. That is like the Packers beating the Saints last year 41-0. That would be the equivalent.
Anyway, the fault of the team lies with the front office. They constantly sign and release the wrong players and they get ripped off in trades; check that Chris Harris trade. The Carolina Panthers need to get back on track. A fully healthy Jonathan Stewart will help that. Can you believe that he was that amazing with the injury? Wow, I can't wait to watch Stewart this year.
