Mike D'Antoni is Horribly Overrated Alvin Gentry is Highly Underrated

May 6th 2010 15:31
Why do people like Mike D'Antoni so much? Why is he known as such a high-profile coach? It's because of his go-go system. His up-tempo style is great for fans to watch, but it never wins championships. The dude flat out never cared about defense. It was always about scoring 120 and giving up 120 every night.

Do you wonder why the Phoenix Suns always lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the playoffs? You have to beat the Spurs with good defense. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili are not players you can let go. They will take over the game and dominate the floor.

New coach Alvin Gentry finally listened to former Spur and Suns' GM Steve Kerr's cry for defense and rebounding. The Suns took yesterday's game thanks to boards on the offensive glass, and top-notch D against Tony Parker and Manu.

Amare Stoudamire would be crazy not to play with the Suns. They are the second best team in the West. The best is LA where STAT has no hope of going to. He should take his huge-money option, and go from there by signing an extension the Suns would gladly give. Who would not lock up the most dominating offensive player in the post? Trust me, look at his offensive numbers and Dwight Howard's. Howard may be the better big man because of his defense, but Stoudamire is so dominant. You can foul Amare, but he isn't a bad free throw shooter.

Gentry also taught Stoudamire to become a better defender. He asked Amare why it took him eight seasons to be more dedicated to defense. The answer was honest and simple. Nobody ever taught him. Seriously, D'Antoni was a guy that shied away from the golden rule of basketball. Defense wins championships. They sold tickets, but they didn't win a championship with D'Antoni.

Grant Hill is happy that Gentry has instilled defense into them. The future HOF veteran also stated that he liked how the coach called out the stars for mistakes. Many other coaches in the league- like the cowardly Flip Saunders- are too scared to point out mistakes to their stars. By doing that, you deprive them of growing. LeBron James and Kobe Bryant can always get better.

Alvin Gentry also did what Mike D'Antoni never did or never wanted to do. Every top team needs a strong bench. Jared Dudley and Channing Frye instill that depth into the team. They both have emerged into top-notch shooters. Dudley was known as a rookie nobody cared about, and Frye was known as a bust before they came to Phoenix. Dudley also shows great defense and hustles as much as anybody on the team. Dudley- 45.8 3PT%, 45.9 FG%, 1 STL. Frye- 45.1 FG%, 43.9 3PT%, 81 FT%, 5.3 RB, 11.2 PPG.

A lot of people like to drag down Grant Hill. Even at 37, Hill can still stop a team's best scorer and is one of the top twenty most reliable perimeter defenders in this league. He is very gritty. He does an excellent job of messing up pick-and-rolls. Hill- 43.8 3PT%, 47.8FG%, 5.5 RB, 11.3 PPG, 81.9 FT%.

Stats are either percentages or averages. These are 2009-2010 season statistics.
