NFL Roundup: Tribute to Patrick Kerney
April 14th 2010 13:16
As I look at the sports news, I see breaking news. The Miami Dolphins were desperate for a receiver and were contemplating the drafting of Dez Bryant. Well, they will look no more as they just acquired top receiver Brandon Marhsall. This deal will go down as the most lucrative deal in NFL history for a wide receiver. For a team that needs so much at that position, a second round pick for this and next year seems like a fair price. Marshall was disgruntled and was on the trading block before last season. He also set the NFL record for most catches in a single game with 21. This showed his importance in an offense. Earlier this offseason, it was rumored that Marshall would be signed as an RFA with Seattle for a first and third compensatory pick. Brandon Marshall had a monster year last year catching 10 touchdowns and 1,120 receiving yards. He had lowly Kyle Orton throwing him the football. This news comes just a day after Marshall signed his RFA tender with the Denver Broncos.
The Buffalo Bills want to trade their best player. Running back Marshawn Lynch has been the stud of this horrible football team these past three years. The Bills now want to trade him for a second round pick. Let me ask this question. Are there any players you could draft in the second round that could merit Lynch's skill? Ask the same for Marshall and Holmes in their respective deals. The answers are no. The reason is that nobody trades first round picks in the NFL these days. When you trade a star player for a draft pick outside of the first round you are taking a huge gamble. Trust me, the Steelers could have gotten a third rounder for Santonio Holmes. Lynch unrightfully lost his job to Fred Jackson. Jackson should not be a starter on any team in the NFL save the Oakland Raiders. It is not that he is bad, but Jackson ain't that good. Another dumb move by the Bills' organization. Do they care about getting better? Their last moves have shown the answer "No". Chan Gailey anyone? If you point out Jackson's rushing total of 1,062 yards I would prompt you with several arguments. Lynch would have ran for more yardage if he had the same number of rushes. Plus, 1,000 is no longer the benchmark. 1,000 divided by 16 is about 63. You could rush for a meager 63 yards a game and still get 1,000 yards.
Jerry Rice is going to play golf. Good luck. Samari Rolle was released as expected. He missed all of last year. Rolle was a former superstar in this league, and I always enjoyed watching him play. The problem is, he is getting old and injury prone. It was an obvious move for the Baltimore Ravens' organization.
Ben Roethlisberger lost his sponsorship deal. Great! I am glad that happened. I think he has disgraced the game so much and has brought on so much bad publicity to his franchise. Just trade him. I have lost all respect for Roethlisberger.
One of my favorite players of all time retired. I hate that no buzz is surrounding Patrick Kerney. Everyone talked about Nomar Garciappara, but nobody really thought about Kerney. The 33 year old played the game with as much heart as anybody during his eleven year career with the Seahawks and Falcons at defensive end. He was a stalwart presence and pass rusher his entire career. Kerney anchored his defense perfectly and was a true leader. Even when his team lost, Patrick Kerney always walked off the field a winner. I tip my cap off to you. A real legend.
He is set to be married. Kerney loved the game and wanted to keep playing, but many recent surgeries and injuries have battered his body. In my mind, Kerney deserves no less than to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The 1999 first round pick is by all means deserving of a place in Canton. His impact in the NFL was huge.
His career is very similar to 2008 Hall of Fame inductee Fred Dean. With 82.5 sacks Kerney is one of the top 40 most prolific pass rushers in history. In 2007, he was awarded 2007 NFC Defensive Player of the Year. Kerney finished off four years of his career with at least 10 sacks. In 2007 he forced 5 fumbles and recorded 14.5 sacks. Sacks didn't measure all of his abilities. In fact, he would rush the quarterback forcing the QB to throw a pick. Kerney would also force opponents to double team him and create special strategies against him. This would create more sacking opportunities for his teammates like Keith Brooking, John Abraham, and Leroy Hill.
Patrick Kerney has his own charity in the name of his brother. The Lt. Thomas Kerney Endowment Fund provides college scholarships and financial assistance to children of fallen police officers. Patrick's brother died when Patrick was just a child. Kerney donates $1,000 for each sack to his charity. He has donated $82,500 dollars in sack money. A quarterback's pain is a kid's hope. Patrick Kerney once held an 105 games started streak, which is remarkable considering he played at such a demanding position in which many players take breaks on purpose. This shows of someone who really loves football. We need more of those guys like him, Brett Favre, and Kurt Warner instead of those Ben Roethlisbergers out there.
