NFL Rumor Dissection
February 12th 2010 08:41
There are a lot of rumors out there in the NFL. Free Agency is starting up soon, and trade talks have been opened. Most of the rumors out there actually make sense to a certain degree. I will try to dissect each one of them, and act as if they were true unless if they look extremely improbable.
The New England Patriots are expected to franchise Vince Wilfork. It seems that the only way they can keep the star DT is to franchise him. They previously offered him an extension with a 23 million dollar signing bonus, but he rejected that. The franchise tag will pay him out seven million dollars for this year. It seems unlikely he will be traded, but you never know. Last year, the Pats franchised Matt Cassel and look where he is now. I think they will franchise Wilfork and keep him. The future is cloudy, however. If Wilfork very publicly announces that he does not want to play with the Patriots, then expect him to be shipped out. The Pats will not let him bask in free agency. They know they cannot afford to lose him. Especially for nothing.
Reggie Bush is getting paid ten million dollars for the next two years and he has not done very much. The New Orleans Saints want to restructure that expensive deal. Ultimately, Bush will not want to get paid less and I think he will get released. Look, the Saints already have Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell. Reggie Bush has done nothing they cannot replace.
The rumor out there is that the Lions have some interest in Donte Stallworth. Of course the team with no receivers to help Calvin Johnson would want someone respectable. Stallworth can help them out, and I think he will be very gracious to have a job anywhere. The Lions should give him another chance, and I think it would be a good move mutually speaking.
That is all for the recent football rumors. I expect things to really start heating up soon. It will be an extremely interesting time.
