Office Chair Racing

Is it possible for the humble office chair to be anything more than a device for sitting on? The answer is a very big YES. I’m pretty sure there has been a moment in everyone’s life when they have thought about (if not attempted) an office chair race. But today’s Random Sport of the Day is not for those who merely want to race down the hallway during lunch break at work.

In a small town in Germany this week the first National Championships of Office Chair racing have taken place. The race attracted more than 70 participants, and involved racers travelling 170 metres on a downhill course.

Looks like fun doesnt it

As we can see from the pictures, most people decided the appropriate attire for such an event was fancy dress. Helmets were compulsory; as I am sure there were many thrills and spills on the way down the hill. I’m not sure if anyone has actually tried downhill office chair racing, but from personal experience I can tell you that once you are moving there is pretty much no way to control your vehicle and as a result crashes frequently occur.

Even organisers say that this was not a once off event, and that they are already planning for next year’s championships. So for all those office workers out there (or anyone who has an office chair) I suggest you start training now.

That's great

I imagine that Chair selection would be very important.

yes i agree, i imagine the competitors spent a lot of time debating whether chairs with arm rests are better than those without.
