Racism in Baseball and The Catwalk

April 13th 2010 14:14
This is an extremely sensitive subject. First Torii Hunter and now Orlando Hudson have come out and stated their opinion on racism against African Americans in baseball. Jackie Robinson Day is coming up soon. It is a day where we commemorate the first African American baseball player.

“You see guys like Jermaine Dye without a job,” Minnesota Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson said Monday. “Guy with [27 home runs and 81 RBIs] and can’t get a job. Pretty much sums it up right there, no? You’ve got some guys who miss a year who can come back and get $5, $6 million, and a guy like Jermaine Dye can’t get a job. A guy like Gary Sheffield, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, can’t get a job.

“We both know what it is. You’ll get it right. You’ll figure it out. I’m not gonna say it because then I’ll be in [trouble]."

Hudson is completely right. How in the heck does Jermaine Dye not get signed while Aubrey Huff had much worse numbers and is making 3 million? Racism I tell you.

Both Gary Sheffield and Kenny Lofton stated that Joe Torre is among those racists. I have always despised Torre even being a diehard Yankee fan. He is a disgrace to baseball and is not a great manager. Torre has always fallen into talent brought on by good farm systems and financial flexibility.

He came out an jabbed his former team in a book because of a grudge. Torre felt that the Yanks' move to not resign him was classless. Look who's talking. Joe Torre also backstabbed players he coached like Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, and David Wells. This prompted more bad publicity in the direction of A-Rod and the unwanted nickname of A-Roid.

The New York Yankees have a right to be angry about that miserable catwalk. The Yankees still won, but a Longorian hit created a buzz. Longoria hit what was about to be a pop-up. Mark Teixeira ranged in and would have caught it, but the ball bounced off the catwalk and dropped at second for a single.

I know in (Cowboys) Stadium, the punters were screwing around in preseason hitting the scoreboard, but they said it was a dead ball and you re-punt it. It seems to me if a guy skies a ball and it ricochets (off the catwalk) ... I mean, what if that's the seventh game of the World Series? Really, that ball is an out 999 out of 1,000 times."

That quote above was from Teixeira. He makes an extremely valid point. This should never happen. I don't know if the Rays can do anything about it, but it could have a huge impact in a big game. Major League Baseball should create a special catwalk rule labeling anything that hits it foul unless if it passes over the home run wall.

Now even though the Yankees won and did not give up a run in that inning, there was two outs and the single created a bases-loaded situation as the score was a slight 4-2 edge for the Bombers. Luckily, AJ Burnett got out of the jam. Now imagine if runs scored after that controversial single.

Duk is a blogger for Yahoo Sports and bashed the Yankees. In case you don't know him, avoid reading what he writes. He is awful and writes baseless articles that almost always attack the Yankees and their players. He seriously hates Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez.

Duk said, "But if the Yankees really don't like the rule, then let them pay for the new Rays ballpark that St. Petersburg-area taxpayers don't seem interested in footing."

Whoa, whoa Duk. Come on. I thought you were a sports blogger not the clone of Rush Limbaugh. The Rays don't even use the revenue money the Yankees create for other teams. There is no need for a new ballpark in St. Petersburg, just an MLB rule. The Yankees have this money because their owner chooses to use most of it for the good of the team and they have built a franchise steadily from the beginning. Remember, the Yanks started too. They were the Highlanders in 1903 with Jesse Tannehill, Willie Keeler, Jimmy Williams, and Jack Chesbro.

Although you make a valid point about Tropicana Field, I don't think it's as big of a problem as people make it out to be. Yes, it is something that should be discussed. But it can't be used to someone's advantage, and if you could, it applies to both teams. Everyone knows about the dome going into the game. Kind of like the Green Monster is always in left field of fenway.

As for racism, it's a touchy subject, so I'm not going to go into that. Sorry. But great article nonetheless

Thanks for the comment. It could apply both ways, but in any case it would create an unfair advantage. It is not a huge subject, but it is something people need to realize. Racism in baseball is a very touchy subject, which is why I only talked about it because Orlando Hudson brought it up.
