Recent NFL Trade Evaluations and The NFL Draft is Overhyped

April 26th 2010 14:22
The Oakland Raiders continued their streak of smart moves. They now have a quality quarterback to use instead of JaMarcus Russell. The Oakland Raiders pretty much ripped off the Washington Redskins in a Jason Campbell trade that will make the Raiders much better. Al Davis shipped off a fourth rounder in 2012. Think about that. That pick is worth an F in scale value. It is way in the future and is a low round pick where you probably won't get a player as good as Campbell. Campbell's grade is a C . He is a capable starter in the NFL. He won't be good this year because of poor receivers, lack of a running game, and he has to learn a new playbook. As time goes on, this deal will pay its dividends.

Pete Carroll already looks like a genius of a coach. He made all the right moves on draft day, and he now traded for two quality running backs. He coached LenDale White in college at USC. The college standout turned into a very good running back with skills coveted and virtually unmatched at the goal line. The Seahawks also got burly defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson from the Titans. Vickerson may be huge, but he is awful. Both teams swapped fourth and sixth round picks. The Titans got ripped off big time.

The other guy Carroll and the Seahawks acquired was speedster Leon Washington. This trade came after the New York Jets moved up to pick a USC running back. They dealt a fourth and sixth rounder to the Carolina Panthers in order to move up and take Joe McKnight- former teammate of Mark Sanchez- in the fourth round. Washington was traded to the Hawks for the Seahawks' fifth round pick. The Jets also added a seventh rounder to the deal. This was another rip off that the Seahawks won. The Jets picked a fullback named John Conner with that pick.

The Jets cut Alan Faneca. That's not a surprise at all. Faneca is past his prime. Speaking of former stud offensive linemen past their primes, Russell Okung may be the permanent replacement for Walter Jones at left tackle. Sources are saying that Jones will retire soon. He is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

The New England Patriots bolsted their defensive line's inside presence by signing veteran defensive tackle Gerard Warren. Solid linebacker Akin Ayodele was signed to a one year deal by the Denver Broncos. The Bucs signed Jevan Snead. Mike Nugent got a two year deal with the Bengals and Michael Gaines got a one year deal by the Houston Texans. All the moves were solid, but I really like the Bengals' and Broncos'. Both guys they signed are good players. Nugent is one of the better kickers in the league.

Stud linebacker Kirk Morrison gets a lack of credit. The Oakland Raiders always have to make one bad move. They did now. Rolando McClain and Kirk Morrison could have made one of the most feared tandems at linebacker in the league. In another draft day rip off, the Jacksonville Jaguars finally made a smart move. Morrison was dealt for just a fifth round pick. Is Austin Lane really worth Kirk Morrison? Come on people, in this market we should start trading for stars and not draft picks. Very rarely does a draft pick even become a starter.

Bryant McFadden will reunited with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former star cornerback took a leave from the Arizona Cardinals, who faced the Steelers in the Super Bowl 2 years ago. The Steelers also got a sixth rounder and only gave up one of three fifth round picks they acquired. Steelers win.

Is the draft really that great? Oh my goodness we just picked a guy who won't even start! We traded a starting linebacker to basically draft a defensive end who we won't remember in ten years! Seriously. Only about thirty of these players in the draft even become notable starters in their first year. After three years, only about twenty of them are surviving in this league. Look at the ratios. You could just cheaply get veterans by trading mid-round picks for them. The draft is overrated. I like ESPN, but the media and everybody else is making it sound to exciting. We should be happy we got Jimmy Clausen or Sam Bradford or guys like that. However, we should not care about the late round guys or deal star players for anybody but a second or first rounder. Hopefully somebody starts trading for Marshawn Lynch. That star running back is about to be a bargain. How many Marshawns can you find in the fourth round next year? None.
