I am back guys, after a nice vacation. I apologize because I did not get to write about all the incredible signings and trades. There were so many out there like LeBron, Bosh, Cliff Lee, and Yunel Escobar. Not to mention Thierry Henry. A lot of people want me to start writing a little bit about soccer. I'm not to thrilled about the idea, but I'll try it out for the next few weeks. Anyway, this one's for George Steinbrenner.
Everybody that has read my blog for a while or knows me well knows that I am a diehard Yankees fan. Well, their owner passed away from a heart attack. He lived a good, long life of 80 years old.
Steinbrenner not only won 7 World Series titles and showed why the Yankees are the best in history, he also revolutionized free agency. When he took over in 1973, four years after Curt Flood started free agency, there was no aggressive chase over stars on the market.
People often criticized him for spending his way, but he was one of the owners that actually spent their own money for the good of the team. The Players Association should be extremely thankful that he spent.
Owners used to never spend until Steinbrenner came around. He forced other teams to pay for top free agents. Pujols and Howard have Flood and the Yankee owner to thank for their sizable paychecks. Without Steinbrenner, they would most likely be making half of that.
I truly think that Steinbrenner should find his name engraved in Cooperstown. In my opinion, he truly was the greatest owner of All-Time. He had everything. The money, the intelligence, the leadership, the strength, the demeanor, and the selflessness to spend some of his money on other people. For who? For baseball and fans like us.
