Tribute to John Wooden
June 5th 2010 13:52
Before I get into the horrible news, I want to mention Juan Samuel. The Dave Trembley firing I mentioned did happen. Former Phillies superstar Juan Samuel is now coach of the Baltimore Orioles.
The greatest coach in collegiate sports history just passed away. College Basketball coach John Wooden coach his team to four 30-0 seasons. Those are so rare these days. They almost never happen.
Wooden had quotes and lessons for all of us. He won ten championships for UCLA. We remember his 99 years. We should celebrate almost a century of him gracing our earth. He made the game of basketball what it is today.
His legacy makes it that of a historical legend. John Wooden was a man worth knowing.
“He established a goal that is unreachable in college sports,” said Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson at the NBA Finals on Thursday. “And he held it to such a standard that we all appreciate his teachings and mentoring of his college students.
“I think it’s a day gone past for what we see now out of college players. But at the time, it was inspirational and his coaching has been an inspiration to all us coaches.”
I can argue that Wooden was more inspirational to the game of basketball than Phil Jackson. Wooden came first. He coached college kids. No matter the recruitments- point the finger at Roy Williams- he always came in with a winning season. You may talk about achievements, but his career cannot be summed up by accolades. Just look at how we love him. Just look at how much people respect and mourn Wooden.
John Wooden died of natural causes at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The strip above will be now dedicated to him. I can't really do much to honor such a great player, but I wish I could.
